Sunshine & Optimism

I grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona, during the 1970s and '80s — a magical time and place filled with sunshine, optimism, and possibility. I attended Coronado High School (of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure fame), where I played football, wrestled, and ran track. After high school, I went on to Arizona State University to pursue a degree in music before switching to finance and ultimately settling on architecture.

A funny thing happened on my way to getting my degree, however — I discovered a spark that would change my life forever.

The Spark That Changed Everything

I resisted computers for a long time. My days were spent outside in the sunshine — and the green-glow of terminals at the time held zero appeal. The little time I spent inside was spent practicing guitar or developing photos in a makeshift darkroom. But everything changed in 1990 during my first year of college.

One afternoon in the library, I passed by a terminal and saw something I’d never seen before—a photograph on a computer screen, replacing the usual blocky green text. I stopped in my tracks, completely mesmerized. How could something previously so unappealing to me suddenly become an obsession?

That moment ignited a passion for technology that has defined my career. I dove headfirst into learning how computers worked— not just to understand them, but to explore how they could connect people, solve problems, and create extraordinary possibilities.

Building Celebsites

In the mid-1990s, I took a leap — a hiatus from Arizona State — to build an entertainment company during the early days of the Web. That company, CelebSites, became a Top 200 web property, featured in Entertainment Weekly and Fast Company. CelebSites thrived on three key pillars:

A talented production team managing official websites for the top celebrities of the day, including Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, and Denzel Washington.
A directory of thousands of fan sites maintained by the online community of young web developers.
A platform for publicists to track and manage their clients' online presence.

With these three assets working together, we were able to amplify our clients and build a business that outpaced larger, studio-backed competitors. This experience taught me the power of strategic alignment and leveraging complementary assets to create outsized impact.

Creating Athlinks

The lessons I learned from building CelebSites laid the foundation for my next big adventure: Athlinks, a social racing and results platform for endurance athletes.

My goal was to create a place where runners, cyclists, and triathletes could connect, find their race results, and celebrate their achievements. Over time, Athlinks grew into the largest platform of its kind, touching tens of millions of athletes worldwide.

When Life Time Fitness acquired Athlinks, I moved to Boulder, Colorado, to oversee their race technology as Vice President of Product & Engineering. I unified software, hardware, and a global network of race organizers and timers to transform the way events were managed and athletes engaged with their results.

Athlinks wasn’t just about aggregating data — it was about building a community. It taught me how technology, when properly leveraged, can create meaningful connections, amplify achievements, and inspire people to push themselves further.

Storytelling with Iloomi

To continue the theme of building on what came before it, as I was planning Iloomi, I looked at the 3 core principles that Athlinks was founded on:

Removing friction from the process of collecting meaningful data — race results; so that they could:
Celebrate and reminisce about meaningful achievements in their lives; and then:
Share and connect those achievements with a larger community of like-minded people.

Iloomi leverages AI to remove the friction from the personal storytelling process. An AI chatbot guides you through remembering and extracting key details, asking probing questions and identifying missing plot-points or characters and helping the user to relive key moments.

Then, with a single tap, it automagically writes a rich story from your past, creating an audio narration using the voice of your choice, and let's you share and connect with friends and family — letting them add additional details to your story or write their own from scratch.

The Art of Amplification

While my heart and sensibilities have long since left Hollywood culture behind, the lessons learned in leveraging treasured assets - celebrity, personal achievements, and convenience - in order to grow engagement and revenue in an outsized manner was an invaluable lesson to learn so early in my career.

When done well, Product Development is the art of making 1 + 1 = 30. With every new subscription or download, customers hire you to do a job for them. Understanding that job and doing it well creates a few magical moments throughout their day.
